First Podcast

Welcome to FisherFindings! As you can see, I redid this website to solve some problems with WordPresss and other plugin tools. Sorry for any inconvenience. Hopefully this will be ready to rock and roll. I have several posts that I will make this week. So, hopefully you will find it helpful.

So, what is this blog all about?

Mission Statement

The blog title says it all. This blog attempts to transfer my lessons learned about OpenVMS Storage issues to the rest of the OpenVMS community.

Expect to See

In a nutshell, you will only find information about OpenVMS Storage issues. That’s the focus. Though I often try to answer other questions, I will tend to point you to other resources (such as HP’s ITRC forums) to answer questions about other topics.

You Will Not See

Any proprietary information. Yes, I work for HP. However, I will only present public domain information. So, if you could have seen it without a non-disclosure then you will find it here. Nor will I allow off-topic discussions. So, let’s keep this focused on OpenVMS Storage.

How to Use This Information

I hope you can use this site as a reference site to learn more about OpenVMS storage issues. There is a lot of material we can cover. I hope by pulling together information in one (semi) organized site you can better understand how all the pieces fit together.

Resources

Resources you will find within this blog include:

FisherFindings will explore the following detailed OpenVMS Storage topics:

  • Backup Methodologies
  • Best Practices
  • Disaster Tolerance & Recovery
  • EVA Storage Arrays
  • File System
  • Local Storage
  • MSA Storage
  • Performance Management
  • RMS
  • SAN Infrastructure
  • System Management
  • T4 & Friends
  • Tape Storage
  • Volume Shadowing
  • XP Disk Arrays

This blog will provide a focal point as we craft OpenVMS Storage Best Practices. This should allow the entire OpenVMS community to interact and contribute to the creation of these best practices. Through this OpenVMS production system managers can refer best practices accepted by the entire OpenVMS community.

Layout of the Blog

FisherFindings uses three areas on your browser screen. At the top is the header. Below the header is a “navigation’ tab. Click it to drop down the navigation tools within the blog.

To the left on the main page you will find the excerpts for the blog entries. By clicking on the title or the “Continue reading >” link you can read the entire contents of the post.

Each post is divided into several sections. The text content is at the top. You might find various images, screen shots, and other tools included in this area. Below the divider in the second section you will find the multimedia components. This includes the audio for the podcast and the video for any screencasts. The final section includes links to other areas in this site. For example, if the inline audio or video player does not work for you, then you can follow the link to download the multimedia content to your computer. This area also points to additional pages, such as the “Best Practices” or “References” pages. This will allow you to explore the material in greater detail.

Finally, to the right you will find the sidebar. I tried to provide helpful information as you explore OpenVMS storage issues. Until I can set up the CAPTCHA tools, in order to comment on any post you will need to be a registered user. Click on the “Register” link under the “login/feeds” section.

Eventually I will create an opt-in service to allow you to subscribe to various services (announcements about new content, new courses, new discussions, new posts, new surveys, etc). To participate in that you will need to be a registered user. Additionally, this site provides a feed for both the blog and the podcasts. You can find FisherFindings through iTunes. Or, to make it easier using iTunes you can automatically subscribe to FisherFindings . I also submit this blog through several other podcast services.

The screencast below provides a visual presentation of this same material. Normally, I will only provide a screencast when there is visually rich information that I need to share. For example, when I explain how to use a tool to perform storage performance management, I will include a screencast. You will also find a podcast for each post. If a screencast exists, the podcast share the same audio content.

I will continue to work on the website, but I am fairly satisfied the current layout provides the greatest content with the least overhead. For example, I will work on tools such as translation services. While I want this website to be as accessible as possible, I had problems with the translation service as it existed. I will do more research on that and then add it back into this site.
