about

With more than 30 years experience in the computer industry, John B. Fisher still loves “dinking around” with computers. He sees technology as a tool which (when used wisely) makes life easier.

John B. Fisher

For more than 22 years, John worked for Digital Equipment Corporation, then Compaq Computers and now Hewlett-Packard. Currently, John works within the Multivendor Systems Engineering (MSE) group in the Global Solutions Engineering organization within HP services. Though 22 years in any company should be an outstanding achievement, most of his peers outrank him in time with the company. Needless to say, John enjoys the chance to learn from leaders within HP.

During the past 15 years, John’s primarily focused on helping OpenVMS customers deal with their OpenVMS storage related issues. This included helping customers setup and integrate their OpenVMS hosts into large storage environments. It included helping OpenVMS customers paying for “Gold” service to better manage their storage environments. It included providing Escalation Engineering and Complex Problem Management for those customers who experience problems with those environments. Through MSE, John focuses on helping HP and customers better understand how to manage that OpenVMS storage to attain the highest performance, availability and reliability possible.

The Objective of the Blog/Podcasts/Presentations

Through this blog, podcasts and presentations John provides his insight and experience to help the OpenVMS community learn to avoid common problems, troubleshoot issues and more effectively manage their OpenVMS storage environment.

The information provided through this site is already within the public domain, since it has already been presented to customers at public forums. The only focus of this site is how to better manage an OpenVMS storage environment. All other discussions that are “off topic” will not be permitted.

Though John works for HP and the information provided within this website derives from his experience with OpenVMS storage issues that faced HP employees and customers, the views and contents of this website are only John’s. John simply attempts to bring forth information to help HP and customers provide the best possible storage environment for OpenVMS systems. Only use his views and thoughts to better understand the situation, they do not represent any official position or statement by HP.

One specific goal John hopes to accomplish through this website is the creation of Best Practices for OpenVMS Storage. This will be a community driven effort to try to define the best approaches to common situations. These do not supplant Best Practices already written, such as for the configuration of a storage array. Instead these Best Practices augment existing efforts and provide a focus to address OpenVMS specific storage issues.

Finally, John learns best through example. He hopes the information provided within this website will help others as they work to provide the most stable possible OpenVMS Storage Environment.
